The meeting began with introductions and a discussion of the awards process and the Dean’s awards in particular. Committee members proceeded in voting on their recommendations for recipients of the four Dean’s awards. Committee members decided to do a straw vote first. After that, there was a brief discussion on the nominees, and then each committee member was assigned 10 points to be used for a second vote to distribute among the nominees. This information was provided to the Dean who makes the final decisions.

After the voting process committee members discussed how the nomination process should be stream lined, that only four departments participated and therefore not all qualified faculty were considered. The committee thought that it would be helpful to develop a checklist to go along with the award calls, and to send the call for award nominations out earlier in spring quarter. There was a suggestion that the committee do away with the nomination process for the Dean’s awards, and just have committee members seek information on all faculty to make recommendations to the Dean for these awards. Discussion continued on how that could be accomplished by using previous years’ merit/promotion reviews for determining likely candidates for the Dean’s awards. After further discussion it was decided that this committee would request information from other colleges on their faculty awards processes.

The winter quarter meeting will focus on these issues and the Best Dissertation Award.
