Attended: Bruce Kutter, Dipak Ghosal, Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, Bill Chancellor, andMohammed Hafez. Absent: Michael Savageau, Ann Orel, Bruce Gates and BruceWhite.
Dipak opened the meeting with a discussion on the need to clarify the wording for thesenior and mid-career faculty award call. The proposed wording change for the senioraward includes Step VI and above, and for the mid-career the wording change would include tenured faculty up to Step V. Mohamed Hafez suggested including a five-yearminimum time at UC Davis as an additional eligibility requirement. The committeemembers agreed to vote on the proposed changes electronically. As of 5/2/2005, six out of the nine committee members voted positively for the proposed change in wording andinclusion of the additional eligibility requirement of five-year minimum residency at UCDavis.
The Dean has requested that committee members consider an additional Engineeringfaculty award for mentoring junior faculty. Cathe will check with the other two collegesto see if they have a similar type of award. Committee members will discuss this proposed new award in future meetings.
The committee proceeded to discuss the nominations for the Zuhair A. Munir Best Dissertation Award. Committee members used a scoring system that was applied to eachnomination. They proceeded to discuss the top three high scoring dissertations andconcluded that the top scoring nomination would be this year's recipient for the award. Mohamed Hafez excused himself from this part of the meeting due to conflict of interestsince he had nominated one of his students for this award.
