Minutes

Meeting September 24, 2004, 10:00 a.m.

Attended: Mohammed Hafez, Dipak Ghosal, Stefan Wuertz, Kathleen Ward, Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, William Chancellor and Bruce White. Absent: Brian Kolner and Bruce Gates.

Bruce White opened the meeting with a brief discussion regarding the membership of the committee and the election of a new chair for this upcoming academic year. This committee is now considered a college “standing committee” and will need to develop committee bylaws during this academic year to submit for approval prior to the college faculty meeting in May.

Bruce continued with discussion regarding the nominations for the four engineering faculty awards. This committee did not receive any nominations from the departments for the Outstanding Teaching Award. Bruce suggested that the committee should put forth recommendations for this award anyway to the Dean rather than have this award not issued. Committee members discussed this option and for this year agreed that the committee would make recommendations to the Dean for this award with the stipulation that a bylaw would be discussed in future meetings to cover this type of situation if it were to occur in the future. Bruce continued with discussion on the planning for announcements of these awards during the “New Faculty Reception” scheduled for November 17, 2004. Committee members continued with discussion and ranking of nominees for each award.

The meeting ended with Bruce reminding committee members to network with their department colleagues on submissions for Society Awards. Also, this committee is now responsible for the selection of the “Best Dissertation Award”. A web site has been established for this committee where all faculty can access committee meeting minutes but a separate password protected space will be used by committee members only to access any electronic information that needs committee review.
